Jack Reacher’s short stories: where they fit and how to read them
Lee Child’s Reacher short stories and novellas fill in the gaps of Reacher’s life, from his childhood to his army years. Here is how they fit.
Alongside the novels, Lee Child has written a run of Reacher short stories and novellas, many first published as Kindle ebooks before they were gathered in the collection No Middle Name in 2017.
They are a good way into the character. Second Son goes back to Reacher’s teenage years on a military base in Okinawa, and High Heat finds a young Reacher in New York during the hot summer of 1977.
Others visit his army career, including Deep Down and Small Wars, while Not a Drill sees him off duty in the woods of Maine.
Our Lee Child page now lists the short stories alongside the novels, marked as short stories or novellas, with their ebook editions and where they were later collected.
